Who is David Corley? Penn State just hired him to coach its running backs
David Corley Jr.
Penn State announced on Friday that is has found its 10th assistant coach: David Corley.
A William & Mary graduate who was a prolific passer there, Corley Jr. comes to the Nittany Lions after serving just one season as Army’s wide receivers coach. He also arrives thanks to a new NCAA rule that expanded staff sizes by one starting this week. The Lions’ staff is now complete.
“My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to join the Penn State family! I have admired Coach Franklin’s work for a long time,” Corley said in a released statement.
“I’m looking forward to working with this awesome staff and these outstanding student-athletes!”
Corley Jr. started his coaching journey in 2008 at his alma mater as its running backs coach after setting nearly every program record as a quarterback for the Tribe. He spent two years with the position before moving to coach the program’s passers from 2010-2012, and then moved to the wide receivers in 2013. He crossed paths with former Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop during his time at the Williamsburg, Va., school when Shoop was the play caller there.
The next year saw Corley Jr. make his first professional move as a head coach, as he ended up at Connecticut with a variety of titles between 2014 and 2016 before taking the Army wide receivers job in 2017.
According to his Army bio, Corley Jr., helped lead Huskies’ back Arkeel Newsome to 1,400 all-purpose yards as the running backs coach in 2016, and while at William & Mary he was a part of the group that helped mentor back Jonathan Grimes, who set many program records and received All-American accolades as a senior (Corley Jr. had moved on to coach the quarterbacks by then) before moving on to a multi-year NFL career.
The Salisbury, N.C., native is married to Lindsay, and they have two children, daughter Charlie (7) and son Bishop (4). He is expected to hit the road recruiting as soon as possible, which could be as early as this weekend.
