Saquon Barkley led all FBS back in this stat in 2016; SEC checks in on Penn State QB commit, and more
Today’s Penn State football news features yet another superlative Saquon Barkley statistic and a look at the programs coming after Lions five-star QB commit Justin Fields.
Pro Football Focus has the latest interesting nugget on the Lions’ junior tailback, pointing out that he broke more tackles against Power-5 opponents in 2016 than any other FBS tailback. Barkley cleared Big Ten peer and Northwestern runner Justin Jackson by nine with 60 total tackles broken to the Wildcat’s 51, and oddly enough, a third Big Ten back, Minnesota’s Rodney Smith, rounded out the top-three nationally.

In other Barkley news, FanRag Sports says the NFL Draft battle between him and LSU’s Derrius Guice will be the “be best RB1 battle in nearly a decade,” and Victory Bell Rings says a different PSU rusher, sophomore Miles Sanders, is “the perfect change of pace,” for Barkley.
Moving on to recruiting news as the spring evaluation period continues, 247Sports says LSU, among others, checked in on Fields, who has been committed to the Lions for some time, on Tuesday as programs continue to chase one of the biggest risers of the spring.
Elsewhere, an early look at the Akron Zips is out, PSU has crossed a linebacker off its target list now that he’s committed elsewhere, and a look at the first award watch list to come out headline Wednesday’s Lions links.
