Philadelphia Eagles open offseason workout program Monday: Here’s what they can accomplish
The Philadelphia Eagles will reconvene at NovaCare Complex on Monday to open the team’s offseason workout program, marking an unofficial start to their title defense.
After winning their first Super Bowl Feb. 4 and parading down Broad Street Feb. 8, the Birds broke for the offseason. Coaches took time off, players rejoined their families across the country and the scouting department got to work preparing for free agency and the NFL draft.
But Monday, for the first time in the 2018 league year, the NovaCare Complex will be filled with players and team meetings.
It’s possible there will be some absences — aside from a three-day minicamp in mid June, offseason workouts are voluntary for veterans — and the Eagles aren’t allowed to hold anything resembling a real practice until OTAs in late May. Still, the team will be together and making strides toward the new season.

The NFL’s collectively bargained offseason program is divided into three phases:
Phase 1: The first section of the offseason lasts two weeks, starting Monday for the Eagles. Teams are not allowed to hold on-field practices. Players can only perform conditioning and strength training drills or rehab from injuries at the team facility.
Phase 2: For the next three weeks, coaches can run players through on-field drills, but contact is prohibited and the offense and defense cannot square off in any practices.
Phase 3: Teams are permitted to hold 10 organized team activities (OTAs) that can include full offense-against-defense drills. Teams can then hold a three-day minicamp that is mandatory for players to attend. Here’s the Eagles’ Phase 3 schedule:
- OTAs: May 22-24, May 29, May 31, June 1, June 4-5, June 7-8
- Minicamp: June 12-14
Below are some thoughts on what the Eagles can accomplish over the next few days when they enter Phase 1 of offseason workouts.
