Penn State’s Saquon Barkley ranks among nation’s 10 best players; PSU recruiting target set to announce, and more
Today’s Penn State football news headlines feature more praise for junior running back Saquon Barkley and a look at the looming decision of four-star linebacker recruiting target Dallas Gant.
Barkley has been a prominent name in early 2018 NFL mock drafts, in some cases going off the board as high as the No. 2 overall pick. But the rising junior still has a crucial season ahead, and he goes into it as a Heisman Trophy contender and the reigning Big Ten offensive player of the year. Barkley goes into 2017 as the eighth-best player in the country, according to NFL.com’s Chad Reuter.
Barkley is an elusive and strong back. He’s able to carry the mail and break off the big play. He figures large in Penn State’s return to national prominence.
One of the nation’s best outside linebacker prospects, Gant has listed Penn State among his finalists with a decision announcement expected Tuesday. The 6-3, 225-pounder hails from St. John’s Jesuit in Ohio and is ranked No. 5 at his position and No. 126 overall in the 247Sports composite rankings. He is viewed as a Ohio State lean who is also considering Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame, among others.
In other Penn State football news, Juwan Johnson is mentioned as a breakout candidate by Sports Illustrated. One columnist is betting on Nick Scott to win a starting job at safety, and another sees a roster inching closer to coach James Franklin’s ideal.
