Today’s Penn State football news headlines feature an announcement date for four-star offensive tackle recruit Rasheed Walker and a potential suitor for Saquon Barkley in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Walker released two dates to watch on his Twitter feed Tuesday afternoon, the first a Jan. 20 official visit to Ohio State and the second a plan to announce his college choice Feb. 7. The 6-6, 300-pound prospect is down to Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia Tech. The Lions are currently viewed as his leader, but the Buckeyes have a big opportunity ahead to get him on campus.
Barkley is being billed as perhaps the best pure talent in the 2018 draft, but quarterback-needy teams in the top five could impact where the running back lands. The Cleveland Browns at Nos. 1 and 4, the New York Giants at No. 2 and the Indianapolis Colts at No. 3 are just a few of the teams in the market for an impact running back.
Denver Post columnist Mark Kiszla also makes the case for the Broncos to forget about a quarterback with the No. 5 pick and pull the trigger on Barkley instead. Kiszla believes Denver should also consider trading up the draft board for a shot at Barkley.
There’s only one prospect worth the trouble and resources Elway would have to commit to trading up the draft board to land. It’s not a quarterback. It’s Barkley. With absolutely no apologies to Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold, they do not have the same Pro Bowl potential as Barkley. He has the legs to take it to the house on any carry and the hands to be a primary receiver on third down.
In other Penn State football news, John Reid had far from a lost season. Damion Barber is ready to take on a bigger role in the program, and the Lions get more top-10 consideration in national “way-too-early” rankings for the 2018 season.
