NFL Draft 2017: Philadelphia Eagles take Rasul Douglas out of West Virginia in third round
The Philadelphia Eagles’ run of defensive players at the NFL draft continued in the third round Friday.
The Birds selected cornerback Rasul Douglas out of West Virginia with the 99th overall selection, a conditional third-rounder the team acquired in a trade with the Ravens earlier this spring. Philly has used its first three picks on a defensive end and two corners.
Douglas led the country with eight interceptions last season at West Virginia. With second-round pick Sidney Jones likely sidelined until at least October as he recovers from a torn Achilles, Douglas will have a chance to compete for immediate playing time in the Birds’ thin secondary in 2017.
Here are some segment of the CBS Sports scouting report on the 6-foot-2 Douglas.
STRENGTHS: Tall, workable body type with above average arm length. Long-striding athlete. Looks to jam and disrupt route tempo. Great understanding of timing and spacing from off-coverage to drive on underneath throws and converge at the catch point – needs to better anticipate, but reacts in a flash. Understands down, distance and situations, which improves his guess rate when jumping routes. Fierce ballskills and competes with a “my ball” attitude to win 50-50 balls and steal catches away from receivers.
WEAKNESSES: Lean lower body. Upright in his pedal and transition with high hips and leggy movements. Aggressive in press, but needs to improve his timing and balance to land his jabs. Struggles to sink and control his momentum on the move, losing cornerbacks on non-vertical routes. Too easily gives up inside position and late to gain proper body position. Struggles to find the ball with his back to the quarterback.
The Eagles have five picks remaining in the draft:
Round 1 (14th overall): Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
Round 2 (43rd overall): Sidney Jones, CB, Washington
Round 3 (99th overall): Rasul Douglas, CB, West Virginia
Round 4: 118th overall
Round 4: 139th overall
Round 5: 155th overall
Round 6: 194th overall
Round 7: 230th overall
