NBA Draft Lottery 2017: Philadelphia 76ers land No. 3 overall pick in next month’s draft
The Philadelphia 76ers will have the chance to add a top playmaker after the team received the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft in Tuesday night’s NBA Draft Lottery in New York.
The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers received the first and second picks, respectively. The Sixers landed the No. 3 pick thanks to a pick swap with the Sacramento Kings, who got the Sixers pick at No. 5.
With guards Markelle Fultz of Washington and Lonzo Ball of UCLA projected by some to go with the top two picks, the Sixers will have a pool of players including Kansas’ Josh Jackson, Duke’s Jayson Tatum and Kentucky’s De’Aaron Fox.
The Sixers picked in the top three in each of the past three seasons and landed Joel Embiid, Jahlil Okafor and Ben Simmons. Embiid and Simmons are strongly considered to be cornerstones of the franchise, while Okafor’s future seems more in doubt among a glut of front court options.
Embiid was the team’s representative in New York on Tuesday night.
Because of their 28-54 record, the Sixers had an 11.9 percent chance of getting the top overall pick and a 24.5 percent chance of getting a top-two pick, according to NBA.com. Once the team’s pick swap with the Sacramento Kings was factored in, the Sixers had increased odds of landing at No. 1 (14.7 percent), No. 2 (15.1 percent) and No. 3 (15.4 percent).
The Sixers also had rights to a Los Angeles Lakers first-round pick that was top-three protected, which gave the Sixers a decent chance of landing multiple picks in the draft’s top seven:
- Two picks in top four: 8.7 percent
- Two picks in top five: 39.6 percent
- Two picks in top six: 52.3 percent
- Two picks in top seven: 53.1 percent
Phoenix, Sacramento, Orlando, Minnesota, New York, Dallas and Sacramento again round out the top 10.
The 2017 NBA Draft will take place on June 22 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
