City Islanders capture dramatic 3-2 victory over Bethlehem Steel FC
After squandering an early lead, the City Islanders used some late game heroics to earn a 3-2 victory over Bethlehem Steel FC in Saturday night’s home opener.
Aaron Wheeler put the City Islanders on top early, finding the back of the net just 10 minutes into the game. Paul Wilson doubled the lead at the 21 minute mark, assisted by James Thomas.
Bethlehem Steel FC cut the lead in half just before halftime. The City Islanders held a 2-1 lead at the half.
Chris Nanko tied the game early in the second half, sending a ball into the lower left corner of the net to pull Bethlehem Steel FC level.
Cardel Benbow played hero for the City slanders. Benbow beautifully weaved his way through the defense and sent a bullet into the back of the net at the 90 minute mark, putting the City Islanders on top for good, 3-2.
Saturday’s announced attendance of 3,264 set an all-time attendance record for the City Islanders at FNB Field.
The City Islanders will be back in action Tuesday night for a 6:30 p.m. match against Orlando City B at FNB Field.
