A Penn State ESPNU special, visitors coming to town, and spring games to watch: primer
Penn State players and coaches will be off for most of this holiday weekend, but there are a couple of notes to point out before things go quiet.
The Lions will host Class of 2019 Mineral, Va., four-star defensive end Brandon Smith on Friday, according to Lions247. Smith visited campus for an unofficial visit last weekend, as well, and the rising sophomore has already netted three verbal offers, from Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Duke
“It was a great visit for me and my family,” Smith told Lions247’s Sean Fitz. “I was showed a complete tour of the campus and facilities on Friday and Saturday. Also was able to sit in on a defensive meeting.
“Coach [James] Franklin had some good things to me about where I am as a player and being a good fit for Penn State.”
Smith will be joined on campus this week by Irvington, N.J., Class of 2018 three-star wide receiver Jasiah Provillon and Class of 2019 Orange, N.J., four-star defensive back Nyquee Hawkins.
Watching the competition
Televised spring games across the Big Ten intentionally do not offer opposing coaches too many good looks at what they might see come the fall, but to Franklin, some things can be gleaned by watching the action from afar.
“I think everybody probably takes those games and looks at them to get an idea about personnel,” Franklin said. “I think probably the most valuable is if you have a coordinator change to look at those things, but if not it’s another piece of information, but you don’t get a whole lot out of it.”
That means that, this weekend, the Lasch Building DVRs will be hard at work capturing televised spring action on Big Ten Network from Ohio State, Michigan, and Nebraska.
“People are running their base offense, their base defense in spring – and it’s not necessarily because everybody thinks you’re trying to hide things – and I think that’s probably part of it.”
ESPNU will have a special on Penn State’s spring developments, and the Lions’ recruiting success under James Franklin, on Friday afternoon with plans to re-air it on Saturday. Here are the air times:
