4-star LB Simon says Penn State “likes me, [and] I like them” with Michigan, others also in play
Penn State linebacker coach Brent Pry is one of the coaches recruiting Simon for the Nittany Lions.
When Penn State offered four-star Jersey City, N.J., Class of 2018 linebacker Shayne Simon back in January, it didn’t have a linebacker in its recruiting class.
Now, it has three: Perkesie, Pa., four-star Nick Tarburton, Erie, Pa., four-star Jesse Luketa, and Cumberland Valley three-star Charlie Katshir.
Make no mistake, though: Simon is still a prospect the Nittany Lions are interested in.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound recruit made a stop at University Park this spring to see head coach James Franklin and his program, and that visit has them right in the mix with the linebacker, who is currently in no rush to make a decision.
“Coach Franklin, I enjoyed all the coaches, Coach [Ricky] Rahne, Coach [Brent] Pry; they have a system in place and I’d like to be part of that,” Simon said. “It’s pretty nice.”
Franklin in particular stood out, which is more or less par for the course when it comes to recruits picking their favorite part of a visit to see Penn State. If it’s not the head coach, it’s usually the stadium or the locker rooms, but more often than not, the fourth-year leader of the Lions leads the way.
“He’s a high-energy guy, he’s cool, he’s down to earth, and he’s just a nice guy to be around,” Simon said.
“They like me, I like them, and just being able to meet them all in person, face-to-face, it was nice.”
His spring travels also took him to see Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Stanford, and UCLA, and while his 247Sports’ Crystal Ball indicates he will one day be a Wolverine, Simon said that he wants to wait until the spring evaluation period ends on May 31 before he cuts his list down.
A decision could follow, but it’s more reasonable to think he will spend the summer before his senior season taking a hosts of visits.
“All the schools are different,” he said. “Different flows, different vibes; I like to see everything.”
