2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon: First Impressions and Photo Gallery
CARS.COM — The 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon flies so far under the radar that I walked right past the 603-horsepower wagon on the crowded 2017 New York International Auto Show floor while specifically there to check it out. The wagon is low, sleek and understated for being such a powerhouse, and that's exactly why it's going to make peoples' extremities tingle in anticipation.

It's a strange thing, after all: A wagon that reaches 60 mph in 3.4 seconds but looks like an ordinary Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon. The E63 wagon is anything but ordinary with 1.1-inch wider wheel arches to fit wider rubber and a wider track width, and a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 sending power to all four wheels. If this sounds familiar, it's not deja vu — the sedan variant of the redesigned E63 sedan debuted in late 2016 with similar numbers.
The front looks exceptionally racy for a wagon, and the sleek profile aggressively dumps over the rear wheels for a slippery appearance. The front bumper is wide, and while it looks similarly styled to the non-AMG E63 wagon, there are differences. The E63 has an aggressive front splitter and large openings flank the AMG-branded grille.
In the rear, a cargo management system with floor hooks has a whole new purpose in this car: To keep groceries from exploding all over the rear window during the inevitable blast away from a stoplight.
A 180-mph wagon is totally contradictory, but that's the appeal of the rare and highly desirable E63 wagon. I doubt many people need a 603-hp wagon to get the kids to school quickly, but if you do, I applaud you.
